Phone photos

Since it was not very easy taking pictures in the hospital with my real camera, I relied heavily on my phone to do the job. Here are a bunch of pictures from the last week!

Photo Shoot

Yesterday morning we took a few photos of Caroline before she gets any bigger!

Charlotte had just gotten out of the tub and had wet hair and no clothes on... but sometimes not forcing the issue ends up in the best photos!

(Charlotte put Caroline's hat on her...)

What a sweet snuggly baby!

Visitors

We have been enjoying having visitors since we have been home. We are all so tired and I am still not really able to do much, so it has been nice to have some company. Lisa came over on Friday with the kids who were so excited to see the baby. Joli was thrilled with her and loved holding her. (Markus was very excited too but was not very gentle!)Lisa was happy to snuggle a new little baby!
Charlotte continues to love on her sister. Sometimes more gently than others...
Yesterday we had a very busy day. Charlotte had dance class, which she insisted that Caroline and I go to, then we had a birthday party right after! Kelly and Brian came over in the afternoon to meet Caroline. I think Brian was a little nervous holding such a tiny baby!
Kelly looks like a pro... even though she only held her first baby a short time ago!
Last night Abby and Shane came over and made us dinner. Syrus was in love with Caroline. Lilly and Charlotte were more interested in playing ponies.
Chris tried to instill in Syrus that his mommy and daddy need to have another baby. Shane responded with messing up Chris' tupperware drawer. It was a fun night! We were exhausted at the end of the day but luckily Caroline only woke up once in the middle of the night, and even Charlotte slept in this morning! It was a treat!
We are so grateful for all our friends taking such good care of us!!

Caroline Amelia

Caroline Amelia was born February 27th at 10:45pm after two long days of labor. My water broke Sunday (26th) at 12:30am. Contractions started picking up for about an hour and then slowed down. We tried to get some rest but every time I would doze off I would wake up from a contraction! All day Sunday we tried to get things going. Dr. Biter came down to check and see how things were going. I was only dialated 3-4 cm. So we kept trying. Finally I just wanted to sleep, so we attempted to get some sleep that night, which consisted of dozing off for a half hour, waking up in pain... repeat. Monday morning Dr. Biter came down again and I was still the same. We decided things needed to pick up so we tried all the natural induction methods. The contractions got worse, but I wasn't progressing. Around lunchtime Lashel, who is his partner (a midwife) came down and she was able to stretch me to a 5. She felt some scar tissue, and had Dr. Biter break it up. Things really started getting painful after that. I thought for sure the baby was going to come any minute... wrong. About two hours later they decided the baby needed to be turned since she was sunny side up. After trying to turn her with no success we decided it was time to head to the hospital. I was begging for pain relief! After what seemed like forever I had an epidural and was able to relax and doze off. They started me on some pitocin, but had both the baby and I monitored since I was attempting a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean). I felt like the contractions had picked up and felt lots of pressure and was really hoping when the doctor checked me I would be able to push. Wrong again. 6cm. So we went in for a repeat c-section. Caroline was born and Chris announced she was a girl. She was very alert and healthy and weighed 7lb 10oz, a whole pound and an ounce more than Charlotte. She was also 41 weeks 2 days and Charlotte was 39 weeks!
The nice thing about UCSD medical center is they allow the dad and baby to stay in the room during the whole operation and for mom to be able to hold the baby while they stitch you back up!
After a few minutes the doctor came around the screen and informed me that when they went in to do the surgery they were greeted by Caroline's arm and shoulder hanging out of my uterus. It had ruptured across my previous scar line and then down. They were shocked because neither of us showed any signs of distress prior to the surgery. They also discovered that my bladder had a 10cm tear in it. They were waiting for the Urologist to wake up and come down to fix that. After stitching my bladder, then injecting dye to make sure there were no leaks, then scoping it, and then inserting a drain into my stomach, we finally were out of surgery 5 hours later...

The next morning we called Dr. Marc (our wonderful chiropractor) to come check Caroline out. After having such a easy delivery (NOT) we figured it wouldn't hurt. Charlotte was adjusted at 4 days, but Caroline beat her record ringing in at 11 hours! Dr. Marc said he had never felt a newborns atlas move like hers did!
Later that morning I had another visitor, Big Sister Charlotte! Abby had kept her all day Monday and Tuesday and brought her to meet her sister. Charlotte was SO excited it was a little sister. She kept saying she loved her and kissed her and was just in heaven. She told us she wanted to go see her friends, Zoey and Hayden and bring her baby sister with her.

Abby came in to meet the baby too.
And then Reyna stopped by!
That night we decided Chris should go get Charlotte and be at home with her, so Lisa so kindly came to stay with me so I wouldn't have to be alone. Getting in and out of a hospital bed after a c-section isn't terrible easy, and I found not easy at all while holding a baby in one arm. Caroline decided she didn't really want to sleep that night, so Lisa and I were up most of the night!
The next day Chris came for a short visit in the morning, in between dropping off and picking Charlotte up, so Nikki came to hang out for the afternoon! It was so nice having friends to fill in while Chris was dealing with Charlotte!

Chris stayed that night while Charlotte slept over at Zoey and Haydens. She gave Chris such a hard time that we figured it would be better if she just wasn't even at home while we were in the hospital. Thursday morning the doctor came in and said we could go home if we wanted! We were thrilled. I still had to keep my catheter but we were just happy to go pick up Charlotte and be home again. I got Caroline dressed in her "take home outfit" and took a few pictures!

After they checked our car seat, which we had a nice long discussion about (the nurses and I), seems most people have no idea how to correctly use a car seat and they were thrilled that I was very informed in the car seat world, we headed home!!!
We picked Charlotte up at school and she was so excited to see Baby Caroline and Mommy in the car! After quite the ordeal, we are home as a family of four, healthy and happy! Thank you all for your kind wishes!
