Weekend fun

We were very busy this weekend! On Sunday we decided to give Charlotte a bottle. Even though I am breast-feeding, it was recommended that we introduce a bottle to Charlotte between 3 and 4 weeks so that she would recognize it and take one in the future. So I pumped and Chris happily gave her a bottle. He was so excited to be able to feed her! She did not care where the milk was coming from, she was just happy it was there! I don't think we need to worry about her not taking a bottle!

She drank just about 3 ounces! What a little piggy! She then proceeded to poop and it exploded up her back and we needed an outfit change! What fun!
We went up to Mt. Laguna for the afternoon with Lisa, Joe and Joli, so they could let their wild animal, I mean dog, run around for a bit. After Joe directed us the round about way there, we finally found a campground and had lunch. The only problem was that it was about 50 degrees and windy! I ate quickly, huddled between Lisa and Chris, then Charlotte and I hung out in the car where it was nice and warm for the afternoon. Even though it was cold, it was nice to get out of the house!

The Beach!

Since mostly all of the guys are home, they decided to have a barbeque on the beach yesterday. Most of them have only been home for less than a week, but do you think they could go that long without seeing each other?!?!? So, we brought Charlotte for her first trip to the beach! She got passed around quite a bit! She didn't even mind all the screaming and yelling the guys were making! She had sand on her face and loved the wind! Maybe she will take after her father and love the beach and the sand! And yes, that is the "I've been playing beer pong all afternoon" smile on his face...
Our first family beach photo!

Some Photos

We haven't been up to much the last couple days. Chris is starting to really enjoy interacting with Charlotte now that she actually stays awake for longer than 5 minutes. She did pee on his side of the bed in the middle of the night this week, which required a middle of the night sheet change. Oops.

The classic sleeping position...
We put Charlotte in her hammock tonight just for a trial. She seemed to enjoy it a bit more, but I still like her in her swing at night so I can see her easier. We'll probably put her in it to sleep in a couple weeks.
Here she is in her swing. We finally hooked up the speaker for the ipod so we don't have to listen to the programed birdie sounds all night...

Charlotte's Birth Story

Charlotte Alexandra was born on March 6th, 2009 at 3:27pm. At about 10pm on March 4th, my water broke. Chris had been giving me a back massage when I got up to brush my teeth and get ready for bed. All of a sudden there was liquid gushing down my leg! I called the birth center and got the midwife on call. She instructed me to get some sleep since I wasn’t having any contractions, and for Chris and I to meet her at the birth center in the morning. I got in bed but couldn’t sleep. I was too excited!

Thursday morning, we stopped at Whole Foods and bought some Castor Oil, as the midwife had instructed us to do, since I still wasn’t having contractions. We went to the birth center and I got checked out. The baby was doing fine, but I wasn’t dilated at all.  We were instructed to go back home and try to get labor started naturally. Once we got home, I drank 2 ounces of Castor Oil mixed with grapefruit juice. I don’t think I will ever drink grapefruit juice again. This didn’t start contractions, just made me have to sit in the bathroom for a very long time!

Then Chris and I walked around the neighborhood for a while. We even tried using the breast pump to start contractions. Nothing was working.  I called the midwife and let her know what was going on. She instructed me to drink yet some more castor oil and to meet her back at the birth center at 6pm to check me out. We then called our Chiropractor, and got the name of the acupuncturist his wife used during pregnancy, and went and got acupuncture done to try to get labor started! It didn’t work.

We then went back to the birth center and checked on the baby, who was doing fine. I was about a centimeter dilated, so the midwife stripped my membranes to try to get labor progressing. We were instructed to get some more rest and call back at 10pm to check in. The birth center has a policy stating that if your water has been broken for more than 24 hours you can no longer deliver at the birth center. Chris and I didn’t want that to happen so instead of resting we walked to get some dinner, walked back, then walked around our neighborhood until about 9pm. We came inside and hooked up the breast pump and I noticed some slight contractions. I called the birth center back at 10pm and they said they would give me another 2 hours to see if anything started progressing. After falling asleep on the couch and waking up in a comatose state, we drove back to the birth center at midnight, where we were told it was going to be necessary for us to transfer to the hospital.

We called my doula and let her know that we were going to have to go to the hospital to have the baby. When we got to the hospital, I checked into Triage, which was horrible. The nurses were awful! Once we got to the labor and delivery floor, it was much better. The doctor on call, Dr. Wong, wanted to start me on Pitocin right away, which I kindly turned down.  We waited until our doula arrived, and then at about 2am, decided that it would be best to start the Pitocin, since it had been 28 hours with no contractions. I was started out on the lowest dose, and they increased the drip every half hour. I finally got up to 20 units, the normal maximum dose. The nurse then had to call the doctor to request to go up to 30 units, which was the maximum dosage allowed. I was having only minor contractions at this point.

At about 2pm, the nurse came in and checked me out, to reveal that I was only dilated a centimeter and a half. I had been on Pitocin for 12 hours and had been confined to my bed with monitors strapped to my belly and an IV in my arm. I was ready for this baby to come meet us! The doctor came in and said he wanted to do a Cesarean delivery since labor clearly wasn’t progressing, and my water had been broken for over a day and a half.

We agreed and I was brought into the operating room where they prepped me for surgery. Chris came in once everything was ready to go and it wasn’t long before he stood up and said “IT’S A GIRL!”.  Even though Charlotte was doing fine while she was still inside me, the baby nurse wanted to have a newborn team on hand just in case, since my water had been broken for so long.

Everyone in the operating room was shocked that we had waited to find out the gender and were just as excited to find out as we were! I was very loopy from the drugs and waited while they put my insides back together. Chris took Charlotte to the recovery ward and I followed about a half hour later. I wasn’t pleased that they wouldn’t let Chris take his shirt off and put Charlotte on his chest immediately after she was born for skin to skin contact, but I don’t think she is deprived of any love! She weighed 6 pounds, 9 ounces and measured 19 inches long.

When I got to recovery, they informed me that Charlotte’s blood sugar was low, and that they usually give the babies a bottle to bring it up, but Chris had told them that I had been using my pump during labor and had been successful at getting the colostrum out, so they agreed to let me try to feed her.  She latched on right away and started eating!  When they checked her again her blood sugar had gone way up!  They then said they were concerned because her respiratory rate was high and told us they wanted to observe her some more, and if it didn’t slow they would have to bring her to the NICU. Chris stayed with her, and I went up to my room on the postpartum floor where I would be for the next 3 nights. Chris and Charlotte went to the nursery across from my room and then joined us about a half hour later. Charlotte was doing well and was ready to stay in the room with us!

We brought her home Monday, March 9th, and have been enjoying her every since!

Little Miss. Piggy!

Today we brought Charlotte back to the pediatrician for a check-up. She weighs 7 lb 10 oz!!! She is getting so big! The Dr. said they like the babies to gain an ounce a day, and Charlotte is 4oz over that requirement! It's not a bad thing, she just likes to eat!!! Chris has been going into work only for a couple hours a day, so he got to come with us to the Dr!

Charlotte pooped twice while we were in the office! When Chris went to take off her diaper to weigh her, she decided to pee, but Chris has learned his lesson and quickly caught it in the diaper!
On the way home we saw that Jonas was home, and brought Charlotte to meet him! He couldn't believe how squirmy she was!
Here is a picture from the other day. Charlotte has been putting an arm out when she lays on you, which Chris and I just love. Baylie doesn't like being left out either. If you look closely, you can see that Chris has Charlotte's pacifier in his mouth... he is trying to understand the thrill of it...
Yesterday we got a new car! Its a 2005 Honda CR-V. I love it! We finally decided that one car between the two of us just wasn't going to work now that we have a baby, so after lots of looking, we settled on a CR-V. Chris wasn't a huge fan of it to begin with, but it's growing on him. He really likes that it has a moon roof!

A few pictures

We are still adjusting to life with the three of us (it was so nice to have a live in housekeeper/gourmet chef for a week, thanks mom!). Charlotte is doing great, but is a little (ok a TON) gassy and it has been really uncomfortable for her at times. While I can't stand to listen to her cry and want to help her, Chris says all babies cry and he could almost fall asleep to the sound of her crying. Great, could you share that ability??? Chris went back to work this week too, and it's another adjustment, especially going from having Mom around helping, to two days later being by myself, but we are managing! We did go for a walk together the other day, slowly, but we still did it! Here is a picture of Charlotte in her stroller!
Charlotte has been keeping her eyes open for much longer stretches of time lately, Chris took advantage and decided to play with her for a little while before we put on jammies!
Chris has been calling her Lowly, after Lowly the worm from the Richard Scary books because all she does is squirm! Here she is laying on the bed moving all around!

Charlotte First Bath!

We were planning on giving Charlotte a bath tonight but she pooped and it went everywhere so we decided to fill the tub and bathe her this afternoon! She loved it for the most part! Chris got in the tub with her to make it easier, then exclaimed "what do I do now". Here are some pictures!

Happy St. Patrick's Day- Happy Birthday Chris!

Today is Chris' birthday AND St. Patrick's Day! We started off the day by bringing mom to the airport... boo... then we went to mine and Charlotte's post-partum appt. at the birth center. Charlotte weighs 7lb 2oz!!! I can't believe she is getting big so quick! We didn't sleep well last night because I have a horrible stomach ache, which I think was due to the antibiotic (which I stopped taking last night!) and Charlotte was sooo unhappy she screamed until 2am, which is NOT like her. Poor Baby. We lounged all day and finally went outside to take pictures in our St. Patty's Day outfits, which was a great idea, since Charlotte decided to poop all over her outfit right after we got inside!

Mom made Chris a birthday cake last night and we had no candles, so Mom was so creative and put a real candle right in the middle!
Joli waited so patiently for cake!
Joli loved helping Chris open his presents!
Here is Chris's birthday present from Charlotte! She picked herself out a present too! It is a onesie that says "Born Into It- Boston Fan"

Here she is after her bath, her hair is so fluffy it looks like she has a mohawk!

Mom's Last Day

Mom is leaving tomorrow... boo. She has been such a great help. Chris and I were joking around at lunch time and he blew his BBQ chip breath in my mouth...

Since Mom is leaving, she felt the need to get in as many pictures as she could today. She insisted of taking pictures of Baylie in the wagon. Chris and I were amazed that she actually sat in the wagon for the pictures!
She had Charlotte all propped up against the pillow. I would say from the look on her face she wasn't thrilled, except that she loves to make this scowl face....
Charlotte has been opening her eyes a lot more lately. She is very curious!
Tonight we put on cloth diapers for the first time. We were waiting until Charlotte's umbilical cord fell off, and the diapers looked SO big. We found out though that they really aren't THAT big, except it makes Charlotte have a big bottom!
Lisa got in some good Charlotte time tonight!
Mom was soaking up every bit of Charlotte she could get before she leaves tomorrow... I was sad, until she just yelled at me for blogging while she was sitting here...

Stop Growing!

Its been 10 days since Charlotte was born, and she is already getting bigger! I had a dream last night that she was already a huge baby with a huge head! I just want her to stay little! Yesterday I felt a lot better so we went to the outlets with Lisa and Joli and got Charlotte lots of cute clothes. Mom keeps saying she swears I only had a child to play dress up with the baby. Its a good thing we had a girl, although Chris is a little worried about the future shopping habits!
Mom heard the weather was going to be unseasonably cold yesterday, so we bundled Charlotte up. Once we got to the outlets (which are inland) we had to strip her down to her onesie because it was too hot!
We bought Charlotte a new hat and had to try it on her!
Last night we got home late and didn't have time to cook dinner so we went out! I ordered a Margarita and it was sooo yummy!!!!

Here is Chris snuggling with Baylie. We are trying to make sure we give her just as much love as before Charlotte came home!
This morning we decided to go to our favorite breakfast spot, the Crest Cafe, and while Mom and I were trying to get ready, Chris was watching Charlotte. This is how we found them...

We are planing on spending the rest of the day relaxing. Charlotte just loves her daddy and sleeping with him! She isn't too happy about the fact that he can't feed her though!
